Application Process for Admission into the Professional Flight Program

 

This application process applies only to those students seeking admission to the Professional Flight concentration.

The applicant must apply for admission to Arizona State University and request admission to the Aeronautical Management Technology program in the Professional Flight concentration (curriculum code 8223). Applications can be by paper or by electronic means. Electronic applications are preferred via the Undergraduate Admissions Application. This application can be found online at http://www.asu.edu/apply/

If the applicant meets ASU admission requirements, the applicant will be admitted to the Bachelor of Science in Aeronautical Management Technology in a pre-professional status (degree code TS 14 8223). Admission to the Professional Flight concentration at that point is provisional and is the first step in seeking admission to the department’s Professional Flight concentration and the AMT Department’s Airline Bridge Training program with Mesa Airlines. Admission to full professional status (degree code TS 31 8223) is required in order to enroll in flight courses and to start the flight training part of the Professional Flight program. This secondary admission process begins with the submission by applicant of the completed secondary admission package, to the AMT Department, information is available online at poly.asu.edu/aviation, link to the application process. The AMT Department will evaluate the required additional information (secondary admission requirements) to competitively determine those students who will be granted admission to the Professional Flight concentration in full professional status.

The required additional information is as follows:

a. Two-page hand written essay as to why the student wants to be a professional aviator and why the student wants to be admitted to the Professional Flight concentration at ASU.

b. Proof of an FAA Class I medical certification. Please provide a copy of your Class I medical certificate. DO NOT send the original. Students must obtain the FAA Class I medical certificate so they will know if they are physically qualified to be admitted to the Professional Flight concentration, and to establish their suitability for potential to attain an FAA Class I medical certification required by the regional airlines after graduation. In order to get an FAA medical certificate the applicant must have a physical examination provided by an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). A list of AME’s in your area can be found through a link from the department web site at (http://www.poly.asu.edu/aviation) or by going direct to (http://ame.cami.jccbi.gov/). This procedure is for the student’s protection. A Class I certificate must be maintained while in the Professional Flight concentration. Students must also obtain an FAA Class I medical certificate in order to “interview” for the Regional Jet Systems and the Regional Jet Operations courses in the junior year.

c. Validated driving record(s) from appropriate departments of motor vehicles (or other appropriate agency) listing any traffic violations, convictions, etc. or confirming a clean driving record. Include explanations of all violations, including those that may have been removed from the record.

d. List any legal violations or police citations. This should include, but it is not limited to, traffic violations, theft, possession of alcohol as a minor, drug possession and DUI’s. Cite details on each offense. If you have no violations or citations, provide a signed statement that you have had no violations or citations.

e. List any FAA violations or citations. Cite details on each offense. If you have no violations or citations, provide a signed statement that you have had no violations or citations.

f. Three personal references that know the applicant and can provide comments concerning the applicant’s background and character. Provide names, addresses, and phone numbers for the references. References should be non-family members who have had contact with the applicant. Possible references would include teachers, counselors, coaches, employers, family physician, service organization leaders. A written and signed statement must be included giving ASU permission to contact the listed references and request additional people (secondary references) that may be contacted regarding the student. Please do not send letters of recommendation.

g. The student must provide evidence of having reviewed and understood the financial aid counseling required in the program. The multiple choice quiz at the end of the section should be completed and included with the secondary admission package submitted to the AMT Department. The Professional Flight concentration will add an additional $45,000 or more, over and above other university expenses. The packet can be found at http://eastair.poly.asu.edu/financialaid/.

h. Proof of Citizenship- Please provide a photo copy of one of the following. The original will be requested upon arrival at the University and as part of the Clearance to Fly process once classes have begun. 1. A valid, unexpired United States Passport; 2. An original birth certificate with raised seal documenting birth in the United States or one of its territories; 3. An original U.S. Naturalization Certificate with raised seal, Form N-550 or Form N-570; 4. An original certification of birth abroad, Form FS-545 or Form DS-1350; Or 5. An original Certificate of U.S. Citizenship, Form N-560 or Form N-561.  

i. Non US Citizens (International Students & Permanent Residents). All students who are not US citizens must meet all Transportation Security Administration (TSA) clearance requirements before being admitted into the Professional Flight concentration with full professional status. For more information on the TSA Alien Flight Student Program please contact us at (480) 727-1021 or through e-mail at aerotech@asu.edu.   International students should be aware that they may encounter difficulty in converting their student visa to a work permit and therefore may not be able to find employment with a U.S. air carrier following graduation. International students are also advised that all certificates and ratings are under FAA certification and may not be accepted by the aviation authority in their home country.

DO NOT send secondary admission information to the ASU Admission Office.  

The secondary admission information will be evaluated at the department level. Upon completion of the evaluation, the student will be informed of the department’s admission decision. Once the required information is received, the evaluation process should be completed within one or two weeks. The AMT department will notify the ASU Undergraduate Admissions Office with the department admissions committee’s decision, and a letter will be sent to you either confirming or denying your admission to the Professional Flight concentration.

  If the student is not admitted to the Professional Flight concentration, they may apply for admittance to another program at ASU to include the Air Transportation Management concentration (non-flight) in the AMT Department, if desired.   All information required for the secondary admission process for the fall semester should be submitted by March 15 to ensure full consideration for admission to the Professional Flight concentration. Students applying after this deadline will be accepted on a space available basis. Prospective students who are interested in ASU should, of course, submit their undergraduate admissions application prior to the appropriate deadline for Undergraduate Admissions.
