Application Process for Admission Air Traffic Management

This application process applies only to those students seeking admission to the BS in Air Traffic Management.

The student must apply for admission to Arizona State University and request admission to the BS in Air Traffic Management. Applications can be by paper or by electronic means. Electronic applications are preferred via the Undergraduate Admissions Application. This application can be found online at the Undergraduate Admission - How to Apply page.

The Undergraduate Admissions Office will then determine if the student meets the admission requirements to ASU. Those requirements can be found at Undergraduate Admissions - Summary of Requirements page.

If the student meets ASU admission requirements, the student will be admitted to the Bachelor of Science program in Air Traffic Management in a pre-professional status. Admission to the BS in Air Traffic Management is provisional and is the first step in seeking admission to the program with full professional status. This status is required to enroll in the upper division Air Traffic Management courses. Admission is provisional pending receipt by the AMT Department of the required additional specific information that will be used to competitively determine those students who will be granted admission to the BS in Air Traffic Management in full professional status.

The student will receive a letter signed by the AMT Department Chair that states the student will need to submit additional information in order to be considered for admission to the Air Traffic Management program in full professional status.

The required additional information is:

  1. A two-page handwritten essay stating why you want to be an Air Traffic Controller and why you want to be admitted to the BS in Air Traffic Management at ASU.

  2. Proof of an FAA Class I medical certification. Students should get the FAA Class II Medical Certificate early so that they will know if they are physically qualified to be admitted to the Air Traffic Management program and also to indicate their potential to maintain an FAA Class II Medical Certificate as required by prospective employers and the FAA after graduation. In order to get an FAA Medical Certificate, students must have a physical examination given by a Medical Doctor who has been specifically designated by the FAA as an Aviation Medical Examiner (AME). A list of AMEs in your area can be found at the Civil Aerospace Medical Institute Web site. This procedure is for the student's protection. Please consider that the student will not have to continuously maintain a Class III Medical Certificate once they are accepted into the program. However, graduates will have to maintain a valid Class II Medical Certificate in order to be employeed as a private, or public, sector air traffic controller. Students must again obtain an FAA Class II Medical Certificate no later than the beginning of the second semester of their junior year, in order to “interview’ for the FAA Internship courses. These courses are taken in their junior/senior year, and are the next step in the Air Traffic Management program. Obtaining and maintaining a Class II Medical Certificate is required at this point in their career, as they get ready to compete for prospective employment.

  3. Validated driving record(s) from the Department of Motor Vehicles (or similar agency from your state) listing any traffic violations, convictions, etc. or confirming a clean driving record.

  4. A statement about any police or FAA violations or citations. If you have no violations or citations, please state in writing that you have had no violations or citations.

  5. Provide names, addresses and phone numbers of three references with your specific written permission to conduct a background check by asking your listed references for additional people whom we may contact. Possible references are those who know and can provide comments concerning the student. References should be non-family members who have had some contact with the student. Possible references would include teachers, counselors, coaches, employers, family physician and/or service organization leaders.

  6. Proof of U.S. Citizenship in the form of:
    1. a valid, un-expired United States passport;
    2. an original birth certificate with raised seal documenting birth in the United States or one of its territories;
    3. an original U. S. Naturalization Certificate with raised seal, Form N-550 or Form N-570;
    4. an original certification of birth abroad, Form FS-545 or Form DS-1350; or
    5. An original Certificate of U.S. Citizenship, Form N-560 or Form N-561.

Only those with US Citizenship will be accepted into the program.

All of the requested additional information must be submitted directly to the AMT Department at:

Arizona State University
Department of Aeronautical Management Technology
ATTN: AMT Department Air Traffic Management Admissions Committee
7442 E. Tillman Ave.
Mesa , AZ 85212

This information will be evaluated at the department level. Upon completion of the evaluation, you will be informed of the AMT Department's admission decision. Once the required information is received, the evaluation process should be completed within one or two weeks. The AMT Department will notify the ASU Undergraduate Admissions Office with the admissions committee decision, and a letter will be sent to you either confirming or denying your admission to the BS in Air Traffic Management. This degree program will help you to become qualified to be hired by the FAA or private sector entity providing air traffic control services. Employment with the FAA or other provider of air traffic control services is based on competitive employment criteria established by the individual hiring entities. While graduates will have a strong background in air traffic control that should make them attractive to the public and private sector, employment is not guaranteed. Although CTI status is being pursued, Arizona State University has not been designated a CTI institution by the FAA.

All information required for the secondary admission process should be submitted by March 15 to insure full consideration for admission to the Air Traffic Management program. Students applying after this deadline will be accepted on a space-available basis. Prospective students who are interested in ASU should, of course, submit their undergraduate admission applications prior to the appropriate deadline for Undergraduate Admissions. Those deadlines can be found on Undergraduate Admissions - How to Apply page.

If you are not admitted to the BS in Air Traffic Management, you may choose to apply to another program at ASU, including the Air Transportation Management concentration (non-flight) in the AMT Department.
